Overview

New South Wales is Australia's most diverse state, encompassing an extraordinary range of natural environments within a single destination.

From the ancient sandstone plateaus of the Blue Mountains and the lush rainforests of the Gondwana World Heritage Area to the vast semi-arid plains of the outback and more than 2,000 kilometres of coastline, NSW offers nature experiences of remarkable breadth and depth.

It is a state where humpback whales pass within sight of Sydney's iconic harbour, where platypus and echidna inhabit cool mountain streams, and where some of Australia's rarest and most endangered species cling to survival in protected pockets of remnant bushland.

The national park system is one of the most extensive in Australia, protecting habitats that range from alpine snowfields to subtropical rainforest.

For wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers, New South Wales rewards exploration at every turn — offering genuine wilderness encounters within surprisingly easy reach of Australia's largest and most vibrant city.

Top Things to See

  • Gondwana Rainforests: A UNESCO World Heritage-listed arc of ancient subtropical and temperate rainforest stretching across the NSW-Queensland border, sheltering extraordinary biodiversity including rare birds, reptiles and plant species of global significance.
  • Blue Mountains National Park: Iconic sandstone escarpments, deep eucalypt-filled valleys, and dramatic waterfalls just west of Sydney, supporting a rich array of wildlife including the powerful owl, yellow-bellied glider, and a diversity of woodland and forest birds.
  • Lord Howe Island: A remote UNESCO World Heritage-listed island in the Tasman Sea, celebrated for its extraordinary endemic wildlife, pristine coral reef — the world's southernmost — and some of the most spectacular seabird colonies in the Pacific.

  • Platypus & Echidna Encounters: The cool waterways and bushland of the NSW highlands and tablelands support healthy populations of platypus and echidna — two of the world's most extraordinary monotremes — in accessible natural settings.
  • Alpine Wildlife & Snowfields: Kosciuszko National Park's high country supports unique alpine fauna including the critically endangered mountain pygmy possum, corroboree frogs, and endemic plant communities found nowhere else on earth.

  • Humpback Whale Migration: Between May and November, humpback and southern right whales pass close to the NSW coastline in remarkable numbers, offering some of Australia's most accessible and spectacular whale watching opportunities.
  • Wetlands & Migratory Shorebirds: Internationally significant wetlands including the Hunter Estuary and Towra Point attract outstanding concentrations of migratory and resident shorebirds, making NSW a globally important destination for waterbird watching.

Activities

  • Birdwatching: NSW supports one of Australia's richest bird lists, with the rainforests of the north coast, the woodlands of the western slopes, and the wetlands of the coast and tablelands all offering outstanding birding year-round.
  • Hiking & Bushwalking: World-class trails traverse the Blue Mountains, Kosciuszko National Park, and the Royal National Park — Australia's oldest — delivering extraordinary natural scenery and wildlife encounters on foot.
  • Night Spotlighting: After dark in the highlands and tablelands, spotlighting tours reveal possums, gliders, wombats and owls in their natural habitat — one of the most rewarding ways to experience NSW's nocturnal wildlife.
  • Kayaking & Coastal Paddling: Explore NSW's extensive estuaries, coastal lakes, and national park waterways by kayak, encountering dolphins, sea birds, and diverse aquatic wildlife in sheltered and scenic settings.
  • Snorkelling & Diving: The marine parks of the NSW coast offer rewarding underwater experiences, with grey nurse sharks, loggerhead turtles, and diverse reef fish among the highlights at sites from Sydney to Jervis Bay.
  • 4WD & Outback Exploration: Journey into the vast semi-arid landscapes of far western NSW, where Mungo National Park's ancient lunettes, vast floodplains, and rare outback fauna offer a compelling contrast to the state's coastal and highland environments.
